Shoulder Treatment Options

After analyzing the condition of your shoulder, we will be able to move forward with recommended joint treatments. Surgical and non-surgical treatments are available and can be administered based on the severity of your shoulder injury. At Specialty Orthopaedics, our shoulder surgeons work closely with each patient to create a customized plan tailored to their specific needs and goals.

Non-Surgical Treatments

With all shoulder pain or mobility issues, we suggest beginning with non-surgical treatments. If pain persists after several months of a non-surgical approach, your doctor may advise you to consider surgery.

Physical Therapy:

Physical Therapy utilizes exercises to strengthen shoulder muscles while reducing pain and increasing mobility.

Medications:

Medications such as over-the-counter pain relivers, prescribed anti-inflammatory medications, or oral steroids help reduce pain and discomfort.

Bracing & Support:

Supportive devices such as slings or braces reduce motion to help improve stability.

Injections:

Steroid medications are injected to the shoulder to provide relief and reduce inflammation.

Lifestyle Modifications:

Our team can recommend modifications to take during physical activity or daily tasks to assist in recovery.

Surgical Shoulder Treatments

For patients with more severe shoulder injuries, such as those experiencing chronic pain or worsening conditions, we recommend surgical treatment. Our expert shoulder surgeons use a range of procedures to help improve function and maintain mobility in the joint.

Total Shoulder Replacement:

This surgery removes of the shoulder’s ball-and-socket joint, replacing them with metal and plastic prosthetics.

Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement:

The ball-and-socket joint is reversed instead of removed in Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement. A ball is attached where your shoulder socket usually sits, and a socket is fitted to the top of your upper arm.

Rotator Cuff Repair:

Reattaches a torn shoulder tendon using arthroscopic techniques.

Shoulder Arthroscopy:

Procedure that uses a tiny camera and specialized tools through a small incision to repair shoulder injuries.

SLAP Repair:

Uses small anchors to reconnect torn cartilage to the bone.

Acromioclavicular (AC) Joint Separation Repair:

Procedure to stabilize the collarbone and shoulder blade after severe separation caused by torn ligaments.

Thermal Capsular Shrinkage:

Uses heat to tighten or shrink the stretched ligaments of unstable shoulder joints.
