Knee Replacement Surgery

Conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and trauma can cause severe knee pain that can be difficult to resolve with more conversative treatment options. Total knee joint replacement, also known as arthroplasty, is a treatment option when less invasive procedures do not relieve severe pain. During this procedure, the injured cartilage and bone of the knee joint is replaced with a prosthetic implant.

At Specialty Orthopaedics, our surgeons specialize in total and partial knee joint replacement. We use the newest technology and state-of-the-art facilities to provide less invasive, faster recovery techniques.

Who is a Candidate?

Knee replacement is usually recommended when the joint is extremely damaged and other treatment options have failed to relieve pain. Some of the common conditions and symptoms that indicate a need for knee replacement surgery include:

Conditions

Certain conditions that affect the knee joint are more likely to require a total replacement than others. Some of the more common conditions that cause chronic pain and are often treated with a replacement include:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Traumatic injury
  • Osteonecrosis

Symptoms

When conservative treatments like physical therapy and medications do not provide relief for symptoms, knee replacement surgery may be recommended by your provider. There are a range of signs and symptoms that patients may experience, including:

  • Severe, chronic knee pain
  • Stiffness in the knees
  • Difficulty walking
  • Persistent pain while resting
  • No relief with pain medication

Procedure Details

During the procedure, your surgeon will remove the damaged bone and cartilage in the knee and replace it with an artificial device. The replacement joint is usually metal, plastic, or ceramic and fitted specifically to your bone and knee structure.

How long does knee replacement surgery take?

Knee replacement surgery typically takes 1 to 2 hours to complete. After surgery, you will likely be able to return home following a monitored recovery period. Depending on your case, your surgeon may also suggest that you stay overnight for your initial recovery.

Knee Replacement Recovery Time

Most knee replacement patients begin walking with walker or crutch assistance within the first weeks of their initial procedure. At the 3-to-6-month mark, the majority of patients are able to walk normally without assistance. However, recovery times following a total replacement can vary depending on multiple factors, including:

  • Patient age
  • Overall health
  • Post-op care
  • Physical therapy
  • Home exercises
  • Activity levels
