Common Conditions
Elbow pain can be related to repeated motion, certain conditions, and recent or previous traumatic injuries. Some of the most common causes of elbow pain include:
Tennis Elbow
Tennis elbow is caused by recurring activity that puts stress on the nerves around the elbow, causing frequent pain and numbness on the outside of the arm. The actions that cause symptoms to occur typically include repeated gripping or pointing of the thumb, middle, and pointer finger.
Golfer’s Elbow
While most commonly associated with golfers, this condition can occur following repetitive strain on the muscles that flex the wrist and fingers during any activity. Symptoms typically include pain and numbness on the inner elbow, especially when gripping or bending the wrist.
Cubital Tunnel Syndrome
This condition is caused by nerve compression behind the “funny bone,” and causes pain, tingling, and numbness in the hands and fingers. Cubital Tunnel Syndrome is usually caused by repetitive activity, previous injuries, and other underlying conditions affecting the nerve.
Elbow Arthritis
Arthritis in the elbow is caused by a deterioration of cartilage in the joint, leading to pain, swelling, and stiffness. There are several types of arthritis that can impact the elbow including:
- Osteoarthritis
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Post-Injury Arthritis
Dislocation & Fracture
Elbow dislocations and fractures are common in sport or trauma-related injuries and can cause long-term discomfort if not treated correctly. Symptoms often include severe pain, rapid swelling, bruising and visible deformity as well as possible numbness and tingling in the arm or hand.
