Hip Replacement Surgery

Conditions like arthritis, osteoarthritis, and fractures can cause severe hip pain that can be difficult to resolve with more conversative treatment options. Hip replacement is a surgical procedure commonly performed to relieve pain and mobility issues in patients that have not found relief from initial treatment. During this procedure, the injured joint, hip socket and the ball, is replaced with a prosthetic implant.

At Specialty Orthopaedics, our surgical specialists use the newest technologies and state-of-the-art facilities to provide the least invasive, most effective hip replacement surgeries for patients across North Georgia.

Who is a Candidate?

Conditions

Certain conditions that affect the hip joint are more likely to require a total replacement than others. Some of the more common conditions that cause chronic pain and are often treated with a replacement include:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Hip fractures
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Some cancers
  • Hip tumors
  • Osteonecrosis

Symptoms

When conservative treatments like physical therapy and medications do not provide relief for symptoms, hip replacement surgery may be recommended by your provider. There are a range of signs and symptoms that patients may experience, including:

  • Severe, chronic hip pain
  • Stiffness in the hips
  • Difficulty walking
  • Persistent pain while resting
  • No relief with pain medication

Procedure Details

What happens during a hip replacement?

During the procedure, your surgeon will remove the damaged hip joint and replace it with an artificial device. The replacement joint is usually metal, plastic, or ceramic and fitted specifically to your bone and hip structure.

How long is hip replacement surgery?

Hip replacement surgery typically takes 1 to 3 hours to complete. After surgery, you will likely be able to return home following a brief recovery period. Depending on your case, your surgeon may also suggest that you stay overnight for your initial recovery.

How long does it take to walk normally after hip surgery?

Most hip replacement patients begin walking with walker or cane assistance within several days of their initial procedure. At the 3-to-6-month mark, the majority of patients are able to walk normally without assistance. However, recovery times following a total replacement can vary depending on multiple factors, including:

  • Patient age
  • Overall health
  • Post-op care
  • Physical therapy
  • Home exercises
  • Activity levels
