Dr. Ben Burch of Specialty Orthopaedics Performs Georgia’s First Endoscopic Spinal Fusion Surgeries

Dr. Ben Burch, Spine SpecialistGAINESVILLE, Ga. (Sept. 2025) — Specialty Orthopaedics spine surgeon Dr. Ben Burch has performed the first fully endoscopic spinal fusion surgeries ever completed in the state of Georgia, marking a milestone in minimally invasive spine care.

Endoscopic spine surgery represents one of the most advanced techniques in modern spine care. Using a specialized endoscope, a slender tube equipped with a high-definition camera, surgeons can perform complex procedures such as spinal fusions through incisions often less than one inch long.

“Endoscopic surgery is redefining how we think about spine surgery,” said Dr. Burch. “It allows us to achieve the same surgical goals as traditional techniques, like spinal fusion, but through incisions so small that patients experience less pain, faster recovery, and often avoid overnight hospital stays. In my view, this will become the gold standard in spine surgery within the next decade.”

Unlike traditional open procedures, which may require large incisions, muscle dissection, and several days of hospitalization, endoscopic spinal fusion allows patients to return home the same day in many cases. The benefits include smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, less postoperative pain, faster recovery, and surgery often can be performed in an outpatient setting instead of prolonged hospital stays.

Dr. Burch notes that while other surgeons in Georgia have incorporated endoscopic technology for select spine procedures, to his knowledge no other surgeon has previously applied it to spinal fusion surgery—a more technically demanding operation.

This is not the first time Dr. Burch has pioneered the approach.

“I was previously the first surgeon to perform endoscopic spine surgery in the state of Mississippi,” he said. “Now, bringing these procedures to North Georgia and the Atlanta region is an exciting opportunity to expand access for patients and to train other surgeons in these techniques.”

With his expertise, Dr. Burch is working with colleagues across the region to broaden the availability of endoscopic spinal surgery, ensuring patients in Georgia have access to one of the least invasive, most advanced forms of spine care available today.
